Route · 4 stops
Day 01 · Leh
- Day 01
Arrive in Leh
Land at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee airport and rest. No sightseeing today; the first 24 hours at 3,500 m are for acclimatisation.
Drink water, skip alcohol and take it slow. Leh is at 3,500 m.
- Day 02
Leh at an easy pace
A gentle morning at Shanti Stupa and Leh Palace, then the old town and its cafes. An early night before the road days.
Still acclimatising. Walk, do not rush, and note any headache.
- Day 03
Over Khardung La to Nubra
Cross Khardung La, one of the world's highest motorable passes, then descend to Nubra. The evening is at Hunder's sand dunes.
The pass sits at 5,359 m - keep the stop short and layer up.
- Day 04
Nubra and Diskit
Morning at the Diskit monastery and its Maitreya statue, a Bactrian camel ride on the dunes, then a slow afternoon in Hunder.
The Shyok route south may open only by late June; the plan flexes around it.
- Day 05
Nubra to Pangong
Drive the Shyok river route east to Pangong Tso. The colour shifts through the afternoon; stay the night near the shore.
Nights at Pangong are cold, often near freezing. The camp has quilts.
- Day 06
Pangong to Leh
Sunrise over the lake, then back to Leh over Chang La. The afternoon is free in Leh.
About six hours. Chang La is 5,360 m, and the descent helps.
- Day 07
Departure from Leh
A slow morning and transfer to the airport for the flight out, usually to Delhi.
Flights leave early; the airport is small and runs on weather windows.
